What to Consider When Choosing Your Retirement Community, Part 1

This is the first in a series of articles  designed to help you with the decision making process of finding your retirement home and lifestyle. We encourage you to share this with family and friends.

Where oh where should we settle in our retirement? So many choices and so many unanswered questions. Should we just stay put? Downsize in our current location? How can we leave family behind when there’s grand children? We may be retired but we’re still excited about life and want to live it to the fullest. These are but a few of the questions faced by the thousands of folks just like you who have chosen the Sun Cities of Arizona. The reasons are many but there are a few that deserve special attention. We start now with your medical care needs.

Medical care is one of those things none of us want to have to have. Chances are however that you will, at some time perhaps sooner rather than later, have such a need. As thousands of now healthy baby boomers make their way into retirement many have not had to face what may come with age, the need for more and more medical care. We believe that care should be convenient and first rate. In the Sun Cities you will find such care. Whether you choose the original Sun City (founded 55 years ago), Sun City West, Sun City Grand or the newest addition to the Sun City family, Sun City Festival, you will have quick and easy access to some of the best medical facilities in the country.

When Sun City first opened those many years ago the nearest hospital was in Glendale. The founders thought that was a bit too far to seek care so they did something about it. A community fund drive was launched and thanks to a generous donation of over a million dollars from the James Boswell Foundation (Boswell was the person who once owned the land where Sun City was built) Boswell hospital was built and opened it’s first two towers in 1970. It has since undergone multi-million dollar expansion and that is only the beginning.

In the late 1970’s the original Sun City was completely built out. Quite an achievement since some detractors were convinced a community of retired people was destined to fail. The Del Webb organization turned sites on another new community to be built on the same model. This community would also be for active adults. Sun City West was born and within two decades it too was completely built out. Then came Sun City Grand, Corte Bella and finally the newest and still developing community of Sun City Festival. Along with this explosive growth in the west valley came the expansion of modern health care facilities that started with Boswell Hospital in Sun City decades ago. Now in addition to that great facility in Sun City we have Del Webb Medical Plaza in Sun City West housing scores of medical offices of every discipline.

All of these ultra-modern facilities are only minutes away no matter which of our communities you choose to call home. So you see, while you may be thinking about golf, pickle ball, quilting, dancing, arts and crafts or any of the other many activities available here planners have been thinking about your other needs. From this thinking sprouted some of the best medical facilities in the nation. All here in the Sun Cities where we hope you will let us help you find your good life in Arizona.
